Helping small business owners, virtual assistants, and creative entrepreneurs grow their business.
Hi, I'm Tara! I'm a multi-passionate business and marketing coach.
Are you looking to learn more about Pinterest marketing for business? The best marketing tool that I recommend for introverted entrepreneurs is Pinterest! It’s great for getting your content seen over a longer period of time, unlike Instagram which usually only lasts for a few hours, and then your content is dead. Once you have set up and optimized your Pinterest account, the algorithm is able to learn and share your content better when you pin it.
Our special guest on the podcast today is Sandra Stanisa, Pinterest Manager and Strategist. She is a huge Pinterest nerd and Canva Expert who runs on creativity and caffeine. She is the founder of Sandra S. Media, a boutique marketing agency that helps bloggers and creative entrepreneurs scale their businesses through strategic Pinterest marketing and design.
On this episode, we will explore how her year-long honeymoon unexpectedly inspired her successful marketing agency, how important it is to test your content in different formats and why she believes Pinterest is the perfect marketing platform for introverts!
When inspiration strikes, do you run with it? For Sandra Stanisa, it was just that when it came to starting her boutique marketing agency serving bloggers and creative entrepreneurs.
She and her husband went on a year-long honeymoon around the world in 2019 traveling all around Central America, South America, New Zealand, and Sandra’s favorite, Bali, for the last month of their trip. When they both came back, Sandra knew that she wanted more freedom and that going back into her corporate career wasn’t going to cut it.
Even before her honeymoon, she was attracted to Pinterest when it first appeared online, and she used it to showcase her travel blog at the time and it gained visibility for her blog. Then colleagues and friends began asking her to help them with their Pinterest accounts and that’s when she realized she loved helping others. In 2020 with the pandemic and the travel industry suffering, she began to ask herself if she should go full-time with Pinterest Marketing and Management. So she invested in a Pinterest VA course under her belt and did just that!
The awesome thing about being a Pinterest Manager or Strategist is that it can easily work with your lifestyle as a digital nomad or someone who just wants more flexibility. It is one of the best service-based businesses for having the freedom to do it on your own schedule, which is a huge bonus!
If you don’t yet have a Pinterest account or you have been using it for personal reasons, you can definitely use Pinterest to get more traffic to your website, blog, or other content that you have.
Not sure how to get the ball rolling on this and adding Pinterest marketing into your strategy?
Sandra and I both have many blog posts on our websites to help you with any of your Pinterest marketing and design needs.
Some great advice Sandra has if you are just starting out is to use the free resources online to start learning on YouTube or even on Pinterest. These resources will show you how to set up your account and market your content. She describes it best by saying, “when you’re building a house, you need to have a foundation. It’s the same as with Pinterest – in an optimized Pinterest account is a great foundation for further growth, and it’s an essential part of any good Pinterest strategy.”
Like Sandra, I believe the first step for Pinterest marketing is account optimization and building that foundation so that when you are pinning your content, the algorithm better knows what it is based on how you set up and optimized – your foundation – your account. And if you still feel like you need help, Sandra has a free Pinterest Set-Up Guide and Workbook that will help you set up your Pinterest account, step by step.
As a Pinterest Manager, you can work with a number of different clients. Depending on things you enjoy outside of the work you do, you can find and work with clients who are sharing that kind of content. For example, I love animals and advocating for them, so I have worked with a pet blogger before. I loved designing those pins each week and finding cute stock images with dogs to use.
Another couple of clients I found myself working with came out of nowhere – personal finance bloggers. They weren’t part of my target audience because in school I wasn’t great with numbers and didn’t like math. In working with these bloggers, I learned so much about managing money and enjoyed learning from their content as I managed it, so if a potential client comes to you or vice versa with content that isn’t something you normally work with, don’t be afraid to give it your best shot.
Like myself, Sandra is multi-passionate about many interests and doesn’t have a specific niche she targets. She works with food bloggers, outdoor travel bloggers, graphic designers, copywriters, and she doesn’t limit herself if someone reaches out to work with her. Her three favorite types of clients are wedding photographers, pet bloggers, and yoga professionals.
I always say that Pinterest will work for any business because most audiences are pretty big. Another reason to include Pinterest as a marketing strategy is if you have lots of content to work with. This makes a Pinterest Manager’s job much easier and fun to work with. If you don’t have much content to work with, then this may not work for you, unless you decide to get your blog up and running or other kinds of content to give you more to work with when you decide to incorporate Pinterest into your strategy.
Have you ever wondered if there is a market for your content on Pinterest? A client of mine has a boat blog, and we’ve really tapped into and filled the gap on Pinterest, and their results have been incredible.
An awesome tip that Sandra has when it comes to determining if Pinterest is right for you, is that if your business is really specific, then it’s good to perform keyword research beforehand on Pinterest to see if there is a market there already for your niche. If that’s the case, then another platform may be your best option. And if you are an introvert, I have a few other marketing methods that I recommend to help you figure out which will be best for you.
In the past few years, Pinterest has really been favoring fresh content, fresh pins and pin designs. This may sound very overwhelming at first to hear when you are looking for success on Pinterest, but this doesn’t mean that you have to create new content all of the time.
For a blog post you have already published, this can look like creating new pin designs for this post. There are so many different ways to put content out there now when it comes to pins.
The different forms include:
Static pins
Video pins
Story pins
Sandra suggests testing different pin formats because Pinterest wants us to use them to determine the best format of pins for your account. Along with the video pins, for example, she says if you have a blog post or a product, you can go and create different formats like carousel static pins, video pins, and story pins, if possible for your account. Then you put them on the platform in some time intervals and based on the analytics of what is performing the best, you can go and create more pins that have a similar design.
Watching your Pinterest analytics and testing is so key, especially if you’re just starting out. I always explain to clients, who come to me that are really stuck on everything having to be on-brand in terms of their designs, that what’s on-brand may not be the best for Pinterest and getting click-throughs. It’s not a feed like Instagram, where you have to be cohesive, it’s a visual search engine. You want to test different colors and styles because it doesn’t have to be a hundred percent on brand. You are really after results, and if designs are on brand, they likely won’t give you the results you’re looking for.
When you’re starting a business, you have to remember that this is different from a hobby, so you have to invest in something. Either in a course or software to get you started. Down the road, investing in your business may look like outsourcing something that’s not your passion or is taking too much time.
You will never learn everything. You are never going to be perfect. There will always be something else to learn. There will always be some other course. There will always be something else that you should take before you consider yourself ready, but you’re never going to be ready. So it’s best to just start.
You may have started your journey the same time as somebody else, and they’re perhaps earning more money than you. They have more clients than you, but this doesn’t matter. You should always focus on yourself, on your growth, and on your business. This is how you’re going to make it.
The tips Sandra shared on today’s episode about Pinterest, starting your business journey, and finding success are super valuable. Pinterest may seem overwhelming at first, but once you dig in to set up your account and take the time to learn about optimization, keywords, pin designs, and the other things Pinterest has to offer, then you are on the right track for long-term success for your business.
