Helping small business owners, virtual assistants, and creative entrepreneurs grow their business.
Hi, I'm Tara! I'm a multi-passionate business and marketing coach.
Have you ever wondered why some content just clicks with you, while other pieces leave you feeling disconnected? It’s all about relatability. Creating relatable content isn’t just a trend; it’s the key to building a genuine connection with your audience.
As an introverted entrepreneur myself, I’ve learned that authenticity and understanding your audience’s needs are at the heart of crafting content that truly resonates.
In this guide, we’ll explore the essential elements of creating content that speaks to your audience on a personal level. We’ll dive into the power of storytelling, discuss how to address common pain points and look at ways to stay relevant by tapping into current trends.
I’ll also share my insights on building trust through transparency and how to keep your content authentic while expanding your reach. By the end, you’ll have a toolbox full of strategies to make your content more relatable and impactful.
People are tired of the shiny, perfectly curated Instagram life. They want to feel a real connection, not see overpolished perfection.
And while I love AI, this has definitely contributed to the craving for more personal and relatable content, too.
We are human. We want to connect with other humans who we can relate to, who understand us, or who have been where we are.
Creating relatable content starts with truly understanding your audience.
As an introverted entrepreneur, I’ve learned that this understanding is the cornerstone of building a genuine connection with my readers.
Let’s dive into how we can lay this foundation together.
I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to approach audience research analytically. The depth of your knowledge about your audience directly correlates with the quality of your research.
In my journey, I’ve discovered that it’s not just about gathering data; it’s about listening intently to what your audience is saying.
To get started, I recommend:
Remember, it’s all about sustaining the right search marketing tactics.
Your audience is constantly giving you clues through comments, reviews, and social media interactions. I’ve found that paying attention to these inputs is part of ongoing audience research.
I also send out at least 1 annual market research survey to my email list.
My annual market research survey was an AirTable form. While I did review each submission manually and see what some trends were, I also used ChatGPT to help me.
I exported all of the AirTable form submissions to a CSV file.
Then I opened up a new chat window (using my own custom GPT, so it already knows me & understands my brand) and asked:
“I’m attaching a spreadsheet of all of the responses from my audience for my annual market research survey. Please review these answers and tell me any common themes or important things I should note, based on this data.”
Then, I also use this prompt:
“Based on the responses from my audience, can you come up with X different digital product or course ideas I could create to help my audience?”
Once you’ve gathered data, it’s time to bring your audience to life through personas. I love this part because it’s where we transform numbers into relatable characters. A persona is essentially a composite sketch of your target market based on validated commonalities.
Note: a persona is not a niche! I’m a multipassionate, and I don’t want anyone to put themselves into a box. However, we should have specific personas or an ideal audience for each of our offers.
To create effective personas:
I’ve found that creating an “anti-persona” can be just as helpful. This represents someone who’s the opposite of your target audience, helping you focus your efforts more effectively.
This is where things get really interesting. Understanding your audience’s struggles and aspirations is key to creating content that resonates. I always start by asking pointed questions like, “What’s your biggest challenge with X?” or “What’s holding you back from getting Y?”
I’ve learned that the strongest relationships come from genuinely caring about what your audience has to say. By addressing their most common complaints and pains, you’re not just creating content – you’re providing real value.
Remember, understanding your audience isn’t a one-time task. It’s an ongoing process of listening, learning, and adapting. As you grow this understanding, you’ll find your content becoming more relatable and impactful.
As an introverted entrepreneur, I’ve discovered that storytelling is the secret sauce to creating content that truly resonates with my audience. It’s not just about sharing information; it’s about weaving narratives that engage, entertain, and enlighten.
Let me share with you how I’ve learned to harness the power of storytelling to create relatable content that connects on a deeper level.
I’ve found that the key to crafting compelling narratives is to understand my audience deeply.
What do they value? What challenges do they face?
By reflecting these elements in my stories, I create narratives that feel personal and relatable.
When I’m writing, I always keep in mind that a great story has a clear structure – a beginning that grabs attention, a middle that builds connection, and an end that offers resolution or a call to action. This structure helps me guide my readers through the journey I want to take them on.
One storytelling technique that’s been a game-changer for me is the hero’s journey framework. This narrative structure, coined by Joseph Campbell, follows an everyday person who embarks on a transformative adventure, faces challenges, and ultimately emerges victorious and changed.
I love using this framework because it allows me to position my audience as the hero of the story. It’s the ultimate ‘customer first’ approach. By aligning my brand story with this powerful narrative structure, I can focus 100% on my customers, identifying with their struggles and making them the central character.
I’ve learned that personal anecdotes are incredibly powerful in making content relatable. They bring the content to life, making it feel real and authentic. When I share my own experiences, I’m giving my readers a glimpse into my life and personality, which helps establish a deeper connection.
I try to be vulnerable in my personal stories, sharing experiences that may not be perfect but are real and meaningful. This vulnerability helps build trust with my readers and makes them feel like they know me on a deeper level.
Remember, storytelling doesn’t have to be a ‘grand thing’. Even small anecdotes or personal experiences can add that personal touch that makes your content more enjoyable and relatable. The key is to make sure your stories align with the message of your content and resonate with your audience’s experiences.
As an introverted entrepreneur, I’ve discovered that creating educational content is a powerful way to connect with my audience and address their common pain points. By offering valuable insights and solutions, I’ve been able to build trust and establish myself as an authority in my niche. Let me share with you how I approach this crucial aspect of content creation.
One of the first steps I take is to identify the questions my audience is asking. I’ve found that understanding their challenges is key to creating content that truly resonates. To do this, I use a variety of methods:
I search Google for questions related to my niche, paying attention to the “People also ask” section.
I send out surveys to my target audience, asking about their pain points.
I have one-on-one conversations with individuals in my target market to gain deeper insights.
By gathering this information, I can create content that directly addresses the issues my audience is facing. This approach has helped me attract new readers and establish my brand as a go-to resource for solving specific problems.
How-to guides and tutorials have become a cornerstone of my content strategy. They’re incredibly effective for providing actionable advice and helping my audience learn new skills. When creating these guides, I focus on:
I’ve found that well-crafted how-to guides not only support my current audience but also attract new readers who are searching for solutions to specific problems. This has been a great way to grow my audience and establish my expertise.
To set my content apart, I make sure to include unique insights and tips based on my personal experience and expertise. This approach has helped me create a stronger connection with my audience and provide value that they can’t find elsewhere. Some ways I do this include:
By consistently delivering valuable, educational content that addresses common pain points, I’ve been able to build a loyal following and establish myself as a trusted resource in my niche. Remember, the key is to always focus on providing value and solving real problems for your audience.
As an introverted entrepreneur, I’ve discovered that staying on top of trends and current events is crucial for creating content that resonates with my audience. It’s not just about being timely; it’s about being part of the conversation that matters to your followers. Let me share some strategies I’ve found effective in leveraging trends to keep my content fresh and engaging.
I’ve learned that keeping a finger on the pulse of my industry is essential. To do this effectively, I use a combination of methods:
Following thought leaders: I make it a point to follow industry influencers and get on their email lists. They’re often the first to spot emerging trends and share valuable insights.
Using trend discovery tools: I’ve found that tools like Google Trends can save me hours of manual research. They help me identify topics that are gaining traction quickly and efficiently.
Joining online communities: I’m part of several industry-specific online groups. These have become my virtual town squares, where I can gauge what’s important to my peers and audience.
Analyzing competitor movements: I keep an eye on what my competitors are investing in. It’s a great way to spot trends that might be worth exploring.
To create content that truly resonates, I’ve found it’s crucial to tap into current events and topics that are on everyone’s mind. Here’s my approach:
I pay close attention to the news and ongoing discussions across specific Facebook Groups and email lists.
What are people worried about? What’s the talk of the town?
I use inclusive language when discussing complex topics. This makes my content accessible to a wider audience.
I try to anticipate future needs by diving deep into my audience’s aspirations. This helps me create content that not only engages them now but builds loyalty for the long term.
By staying on top of trends and current events, I’ve been able to create content that feels fresh, relevant, and truly resonates with my audience. It’s an ongoing process, but one that’s well worth the effort.
As an introverted entrepreneur, I’ve learned that building trust with my audience is crucial for long-term success. It’s not just about what we offer, but how we present ourselves and our businesses.
Let me share some strategies I’ve found effective in fostering trust through transparency and authenticity.
I’ve discovered that giving my audience a peek behind the curtain can be incredibly powerful. It’s not about oversharing or bragging, but strategically showing the human side of my business.
I often share snippets of my day-to-day work, like my morning coffee routine or a walk to clear my head. These small glimpses help my audience connect with me on a personal level.
I also make it a point to showcase the process behind developing new products or services. This not only engages my audience but also allows me to gather valuable feedback. Remember, you don’t have to share everything – it’s about choosing what aligns with your brand and values.
One of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of building trust is admitting when we’ve made mistakes. I’ve learned that acknowledging errors isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an opportunity for growth. By sharing our missteps and the lessons we’ve learned, we show our audience that we’re human and committed to improvement.
I make it a practice to discuss mistakes openly with my team, framing them as learning opportunities. This approach not only builds trust within my organization but also demonstrates to our clients that we value transparency and continuous improvement.
I’ve found that a strong mission statement can be a powerful tool in building trust. It’s not just about explaining what we do but why we do it. By clearly communicating our values and purpose, we create a genuine connection with our audience.
I regularly share content that reflects my business values, whether it’s through social media posts, blog articles, or even in my sales page copy. This consistency helps my audience understand what I stand for and builds a sense of trust and loyalty.
Creating relatable content is more than just a strategy — it’s about connecting with your audience on a deeper level. By understanding your audience, harnessing the power of storytelling, and addressing their pain points, you can build genuine relationships that stand the test of time.
Remember, authenticity and transparency are your greatest tools in this journey.
As you continue to craft content that reflects your values and resonates with your audience, you’ll not only strengthen your brand but also foster a loyal community that sees themselves in your stories.
Keep it real, and watch your content truly resonate.
