Instagram is a very visual platform, but the caption is a big part of every picture posted. Shorter or longer? It doesn’t really matter unless you get the message across! What matters is the content you use and how you use it to your advantage. By writing engaging captions, you are creating a community of people who are interested in what you have to say and love your content. You should provide value in each post, so what you write can help other people in their own way.

How to Write Engaging Instagram Captions

There are several factors that can boost your engagement, but I will mention the 5 most important ones which have worked for me!

First Line Counts

When you scroll your feed, underneath every picture there is a short first line or two that you can see, however, then you need to click ‘more’ if you want to continue reading and see the full caption. The first line of every text should draw the readers in and make them want to continue reading. Start your post with a question or call-to-action, so people get a picture of what your post is about and what to expect! Get people’s attention by starting every caption in an engaging way and they will keep reading.

Choose ‘The Right Topic’

What is the right topic you ask? I guess it’s hard to answer because everyone can have a different topic they want to talk about and focus on. Although, no matter what topic you choose, it should be something people can relate to, something that inspires and motivates them or simply sharing your experience to help others in a certain way. The only thing here you should keep in mind would be to use consistent tone and voice for all your posts no matter what the topic is.

Instagram and storytelling are some key things to remember when it comes to creating content! 2019 has been very big on storytelling and connecting with people through your personal message that you share makes people trust in you if you are doing it authentically. Bring value with every post and explain how your caption is connected to the picture or video you’re posting. What’s the purpose of the post?

I know it can be hard to keep on creating content that brings value to other people every time but don’t worry. It’s okay to re-write your captions several times! It usually gets even better for the third time when you know what you want people to get out of it!

Call-To-Action (CTA)

So important! By using CTA you are telling people what action you want them to take, which drives engagement! The most common ones are directing people to link in bio, asking people to tag friends in the comment or to double-tap if they agree. I would recommend you to use only one CTA per post to make it clear what your goal is with it.

Ask Questions

Asking questions can be very powerful for your posts! Using questions will spark the conversation between you and your followers and by replying to all the comments you are showing people that you care about their opinion or what they got to say! Building trust and relationships through interaction and conversation are great for increasing your engagement, too!

All these suggestions can help you improve your Instagram captions to be more engaging and fun to read! Different things might work for different people, but these tips are pretty universal and most of the people are following them.
